In monogastric animals, like swine and poultry, fats are digested into simple carbon chains in the gut. These molecules are used as a source of energy for growth and for depositing fat in the body. The fatty acid composition of the fat, which is fed to monogastric animals, has a clear impact on the fatty acid composition of the deposited fat. Polyunsaturated fatty acids—or more specifically mainly linoleic acid and linolenic acid—are essential to growing animals and laying hens and must be provided through the diet. Deficiency may lead to depressed growth and low hatchability.
For meat-producing animals the ratio between unsaturated fatty acids and saturated fatty acids in the added fat is important. Linoleic acid and linolenic acid are important for health and growth, but too much of them may lead to poor carcass quality.
Swine
There are several benefits of supplemental fat in a pig’s diet. For lactating sows fat improves milk yield and fat content of milk which will increase litter weaning weights. It has also shown to have health benefits and to improve sow longevity. Since fat is an effective energy source in swine diets it will increase feed intake, gain and feed efficiency when fed to growing pigs.
Poultry
In poultry, feed fat is not only used to increase the energy concentration, but also to increase palatability, digestion, and utilization of the fat-soluble nutrients, like vitamins. Oils with a high level of unsaturated fatty acids are also known to improve egg size and quality when fed to laying hens. Fats also bind dust and reduce the risk of separation of feed particles.
AkoFeed® Standard
AkoFeed® Standard is a fat which is designed to suit most types of farm animals including swine, poultry, and cattle. It is a cost-efficient alternative for boosting the energy content in the diet. It is the perfect option when you have a limited number of tanks to hold raw materials in. It can also be used for coating of the finished pellet. AkoFeed Standard is based on a mixture of fats which are mainly by-products from our own production of food oils.
AkoFeed® Soft
AkoFeed® soft is in many ways similar to AkoFeed® Standard, but it contains a higher level of unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which makes it softer. Due to the high content of unsaturated fats Akofeed Soft is especially well suited for poultry. It can also be used to improve coating under cold conditions when fats with higher melting points may cause problems.
